Kelly McFarling is a peripatetic songwriter who calls California home but has lived in a half-dozen different cities and, these days, tours around with her tunes. On Ridgeline, her wonderful second LP, that propensity to roam is manifest mostly in McFarling's banjo and six-string guitar trots, which canter through moments of gathered reflection and slight melancholy as though they're always looking for the next best opportunity. McFarling writes about the sights before her and behind her and what they signify. A true bard who has really seen the signs and stories she's relating, McFarling delivers those images in a slightly road-worn coo, graceful but never light. Carrboro band Bevel Summers opens the show.
