If Kathy Mattea's name sounds familiar, perhaps it's because you were one of many to curse it when her hit "Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses" got stuck in your head in 1988. The retirement story of hard-driving Charlie is one of many spikes on the charts for Mattea, but her repertoire runs deeper. Big narratives and classic melodies nod at traditions she's lived (mountain music) or just pondered (Celtic styles). Her latest, Calling Me Home, follows in the footsteps of her critically revered Coal to mine Appalachian music for several outstanding tunes. —Ashley Melzer
