Kathryn Kirkpatrick & Ricky Garni

When: Thu., Aug. 9, 7 p.m. 2012

Eliot was wrong: August is the cruelest month. But poetry can be that cool washcloth on your forehead. The Second Thursday Poetry Reading Series at Flyleaf Books celebrates 2011 Indy Poetry Contest winner Ricky Garni's new self-published book 2% Butterscotch. At nearly 700 pages, Garni's book has heft, but his verse scampers and delights. He's a graphic designer and teacher in addition to being an obviously prolific author. Kathryn Kirkpatrick, whose Unaccountable Weather was issued by local Press 53, also reads. Kirkpatrick teaches at Appalachian State University and has accumulated a variety of regional awards in recent years; she was a finalist for the Southern Independent Booksellers Association poetry award for her 2007 effort Out of the Garden. Come early to sign up for the open mic after the featured readers. The free event begins at 7 p.m. —Chris Vitiello
