Judkin Browning

When: Mon., Aug. 9, 7:30 p.m. 2010

There sure have been a lot of Civil War authors at Quail Ridge recently. The latest is Judkin Browning, editor of The Southern Mind Under Union Rule: The Diary of James Rumley, Beaufort, North Carolina, 1862–1865. In 1862, Carteret County Superior Court Clerk James Rumley saw Beaufort occupied by Union troops and his way of life radically altered. Over the next several years, he poured his anger and frustration into his diaries, which provide rare insight into the mind of a Confederate sympathizer. Browning will read from and sign copies of the book starting at 7:30 p.m. —Zack Smith
