The latest release from Josh Ritter is a five-disc audiobook of the wide-eyed, strong-penned singer-songwriter reading his first novel, Bright's Passage, in its entirety. Issued last year, the well-received book follows a World War veteran home, only accompanied this time by an angel. Ritter is one of music's few current guys with a guitar who could actually pull something like this off—affable and magnetic, his personality seems just as braced by a love of compelling stories. His songs have been nothing if not intricate, multivalent stories, where love is laced with poison and turmoil is lined with joy. A book—and, subsequently, a recording of him reading it—feels like a natural progression of Ritter's well-done discography.
