Jonathan Byrd, Michael Rank & Stag

When: Sat., Jan. 12, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $14-17

Jonathan Byrd is a combination of his heritage and fascinations. The former received a workout on his last disc, 2010's Cackalack, which paid homage to Byrd's Piedmont roots. But he's also displayed a deep, abiding affection for Texas country singer-songwriters, from Townes and Willie to Ray Wylie Hubbard, and for meditative acoustic folk. Opening is former Snatches of Pink auteur Michael Rank with his latest project, Stag, which blends Stonesy strut-and-slide with a bedraggled spirit reminiscent of Verbena's cult favorite, Souls for Sale. The 9 p.m. show costs a steep $14–$17. —Chris Parker
