It's been odd to watch the Jonas Brothers grow up. Their new "First Time" video, for instance, shows these ex-teens gambling, pool-partying & convertible-cruising in Vegas. There's even beer pong! But there's no dirt or danger; rather, it's kind of cute. This is, of course, the next logical step from the Disney-safe, underage innuendo of earlier songs such as "SOS." It's a 15-year-old's image of what adults do for fun. Did the Jonas Brothers ever promise anything other than catchy, upbeat mass-audience pop-rock that's safe enough to pass the strictest parents? The band still delivers, then, as "First Time" features throbbing bass whomp and vague lyrics delivered in huge, shout-along choruses. While this growing up may mean more "serious" songs from Nick Jonas' blueshammer side project, we're probably better off with more inspirational club-thumpers like this single. Karmin and DJ Mike Tompkins open.
