John Milliken Thompson

When: Fri., Sept. 13, 2 p.m. 2013
Local author John Milliken Thompson's new novel, Love and Lament, chronicles the hardships of the Hartsoe family (The Hartsoe Hardships would have been a harder title to sell), specifically those of Mary Bet Hartsoe, who comes to believe her family is cursed as she tries to find her way and keep her father on the right path in the years after the Civil War. (Thompson also is at the Regulator in Durham at 7 p.m. Friday, at McIntyre's in Fearrington Village at 11 a.m. Saturday and at Flyleaf in Chapel Hill at 2 p.m. Sunday.) —Zack Smith
