John Brown & the Groove Shop Band

When: Wed., July 4, 6 p.m. 2012
Price: Free

John Brown is an accomplished jazz bassist, the director of the jazz program at Duke University, and the leader of no fewer than five polished and professional jazz ensembles. But at this Independence Day gig, he won't indulge in complex originals or time-tested standards. Instead, he'll rip through funk and disco covers without mercy. His 13-member Groove Shop Band conquers hits from the likes of KC & the Sunshine Band and Stevie Wonder, eagerly stamping them as their own. The free show starts at 6 p.m. —Jordan Lawrence
