From theater school at UNC-Chapel Hill to launching a music career in Chicago to putting down roots in Austin, Joe Pug has spent his 20s in some of the country's best locales for indie-grounded singer-songwriters. On his new disc The Great Despiser, Pug takes another step forward as a recording artist, working with noted producer Brian Deck (Iron & Wine, Modest Mouse) and enlisting support from the likes of longtime Josh Ritter sideman Sam Kassirer and Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn (who sings along on the title track). The spotlight remains on Pug's compelling acoustic-centered originals, though his cover of "Deep Dark Wells" by fellow Austin songwriter Harvey Thomas Young proves a sterling find. David Wax Museum opens the 9 p.m. show; tickets are $9 in advance, $11 at the door. —Peter Blackstock
