Born in St. Louis to Sri Lankan parents, guitarist and troubadour Bhi Bhiman distills American music in a way that feels age-old but fresh. With a rich, timeworn voice and a dose of humor breathing vitality into soulful folk and blues tunes, Bhiman evokes a bygone era when espousing slow-paced country living or the lifestyle of train-hopping hobos. Those numbers sit well beside ones penned about disgraced Enron executives and former Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols. Bhiman opens for earnest roots singer-songwriter Joe Pug, a former UNC student now living in Austin, Texas, who's touring behind his third album, The Great Despiser. Pug's soft ballads display a penchant for pop accessibility, though he'll veer toward the political as well. —Spencer Griffith
