Joe Bonamassa's father owned a guitar store and gave his son his first six-string when Joe was 4. Now, the 35-year-old guitar hero is deeply informed by the rock side of the blues, inculcated from an early age in Jimi and Stevie Ray. Perhaps that's why he's expressed greater affinity for '60s British blues than its Chicago and Delta antecedents. He's a very fluid player with plenty of boogie in his backbeat, plus a predilection for spooky menace. A prodigious worker, Bonamassa is supporting Driving Towards the Daylight, his tenth studio album in a dozen years. —Chris Parker
