Jay Bilas

When: Tue., April 2, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: Free

Triple threat Jay Bilas—Duke class of 1986 basketball star, popular ESPN analyst and practicing lawyer—hits Durham to present his first book, Toughness: Developing True Strength On and Off the Court. Based on the eponymous ESPN article that evoked lusty enthusiasm from coaches, fathers, soldiers and old-school hard-asses worldwide, Bilas' book is a quick, light read that supercollides his own life, a fierce love of basketball and rich anecdotes of famous tough folks he's known, from Coach K to Mia Hamm to NASA engineers. The stories are good and often fun, even if the book seems less than the sum of its parts and fails to mention the substantial research that's been done on the subject (Duckworth's Grit Scale, anyone?). But Bilas is sure to entertain a Triangle crowd mulling their own mettle, their children's character or the toughness of their favorite teams in March. —Eric Martin
