Last year's Lowcountry, the sophomore release by Raleigh quintet Jack the Radio, consists largely of swampy, Southern-fried blues rockers such as "Carolina Mud" and "Truck Stop Man"—complete with roaring slide guitar and Muscle Shoals-style horns—and sensitive, mature modern rock ballads such as "Realize" and "A Darker Age." Those latter tunes come dosed with varying degrees of the Dave Matthews Band's poppy, jam-band enthusiasm. Jack the Radio is largely, happily defined by this duality. Charlottesville's Carl Anderson opens with rootsy singer-songwriter fare reminiscent of Tom Petty and Ryan Adams. —Spencer Griffith
