America's Labor Day holiday was instituted during a very different America, one with violent clashes between unionized laborers and the capitalist-backed cops and strikebreakers. An ecumenical, end-of-summer day off became an easy way to pay lip service to the American worker and the day of observance remains an inalienable reason to leave town and office for the weekend. Although there's little left in the way of overt labor consciousness, leave it to Paperhand Puppet Intervention to be about the only local entertainment option on Labor Day Monday (aside from minor league baseball in both Zebulon and Durham; season finales for both, although the Bulls begin the playoffs Friday, Sept. 10). Paperhand's annual summer show, Islands Unknown, gets a performance today at 7 p.m., with pre-show entertainment to begin at 6:20. Tonight's show closes the Forest Theater run, but there will be two performances at the N.C. Museum of Art this weekend, Sept. 10–11. Reviewing Islands Unknown for the Independent, Kate Dobbs Ariail wrote, "One of the pleasures of following your local artists is seeing their work in the living river of its making. This piece may not be PPI's greatest, but the river flows on." —David Fellerath
