The soul sides that Ironing Board Sam recorded in the '60s and '70s paralleled those of Ray Charles. He performed with panache that mirrored Little Richard and amassed a vibrant, varied catalog that often shuttled beyond mere rock and soul. To wit, Ninth Wonder of the World of Music, his electric piano opus, is a captivating oddity whose obscurity may be unfair, but at least it's understandable. For all his overlooked accomplishments, though, Ironing Board Sam's most fruitful era is now. His charisma, creativity and energy intact, Sam remains a consummate entertainer.
