Inventories & Observations: A Room of Illustrations

When: Jan. 30-Feb. 9 2013

This is the last week to see Iris Gottlieb's delightful pen and ink drawings of bugs, bones, birds and even "the fanciest pen this side of the Mississippi." Her show Inventories and Observations is up through Saturday at the Carrack, featuring a constellation of small drawings that balance objective scientific draftsmanship with a nave curiosity that dives into detail. Gottlieb has a quirky hand—a quavering precision right from Edward Gorey's fingertips—and she draws whimsical subjects within ornate Victorian frames. Everyday objects become ornaments to Gottlieb's eye, and her earnest lines make you take them seriously even as you grin at her droll contexts. —Chris Vitiello
