It's a good time to be a Stephen Sondheim fan in Raleigh: While A Little Night Music is being produced at Meredith College, Peace College is putting on Into the Woods, one of Sondheim's richest yet most accessible shows. A two-act pastiche of fairy tales, it combines a first act that weaves together multiple classic stories with a darker second act that takes on a more Jungian, existential tone involving the aftermath of "Happily Ever After," the fear of failing children and the problems of being stuck inside a story. It's appropriate for older children, but its tone and themes appeal more to adults, which is probably why the numerous planned film versions have never come to fruition. (In late January, there were reports that Meryl Streep would play the Witch in a version directed by Chicago's Rob Marshall.)

In his second collection of lyrics, I Made a Hat, Sondheim recounts that he correctly predicted to collaborator James Lapine that the family-friendly Into the Woods would bring them money for years to come. The trend continues with this new production, performed at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays–Saturdays through Feb. 23. —Zack Smith
