in words afire

"When the moment hatches in time's womb there will be no art talk," South African poet Willie Kgositsile wrote envisioning a time when poetry would be set aside for revolution. "The only poem you will hear will be the spearpoint pivoted in the punctured marrow of the villain.... Therefore we are the last poets of the world."

Those thoughts were the inspiration in 1968 for the name that four young African Americans took for their group--a groundbreaking ensemble that threw words around like Molotov cocktails to a heavy African beat. The remaining two original members of The Last Poets--Umar Bin Hassan and Abiodun Oyewole--headline the Hayti Heritage Center's Spoken Word and Hip Hop Festival on Saturday, Nov. 13 with MUGABEE and Tim Lee. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15, $8 students and senior citizens.

You can find information at www.hayti.org about events, films and workshops at the four-day festival, which runs Nov. 11-14.
