In visual art

Well, now that Indy readers, in the recent Real Best of the Triangle issue, have officially named LUMP gallery one of the Triangle's best art galleries, and the editorial staff has identified it as the "Best Place to Be Challenged By Contemporary Art," maybe it's time for you to check it out for yourself. If you're a contemporary photography aficionado, LUMP's latest show, Towards Tomorrow, a photography exhibition curated by Tammy Rae Carland, is just the ticket. According to Carland, the show "is about flipping and complicating the notions of photographic practice," which has traditionally been associated with the formal tropes of memory, nostalgia and preservation. "Though I have embraced and taught this discourse, I have also sought to find pleasure in the present and possibility in the future," Carland says. In this show, she brings together photographic works that normally wouldn't be found together, from Rosey Hong-an Truong's photos of two aspiring hip-hop artists, which explore what it means to be young, black and male, to Dusty Lombardo's documentation of a year in which she was affected by the way her city, San Francisco, was changing due to the displacement caused by the new dot-com economy. See the results at LUMP through the end of May. Call 821-9999 for details.
