A collaboration between the Ackland Art Museum and a graduate seminar in art history directed by UNC-Chapel Hill art professor Mary Sheriff has resulted in the exhibition Reason and Fantasy in an Age of Enlightenment, now up at the Ackland. Fantasy, whether in the form of irrationality or imagination, is as much a part of the 18th century as reason, and again and again in the art of the period we see reason and fantasy, common sense and folly, order and disorder confronting one another. The complexities and contradictions of the 18th-century spirit are explored in this new exhibition, as demonstrated by William Hogart's "A Harlot's Progress," 1732 (pictured), in which scientific progress is represented by a pair of physicians quarreling over the merits of their prescriptions while the patient dies.
