In valentines

It's not every day you can satisfy your craving for unconditional love, and, um, cheese, but the Celebrity Dairy Goat Farm has it all Feb. 11, when they host their free annual Valentine's Open Barn. Roughly 40 baby goats will be roiling around from 1 to 5 p.m.--the little tykes love attention, and a few lucky visitors may even get to bottle-feed them. In operation for a dozen years now, the Celebrity Dairy supplies goat cheese to the Carrboro Farmer's Market and several local area restaurants, and they've opened up a bed and breakfast right on their property, where goaty delicacies will be served throughout the afternoon. For directions to the Siler City farm, check out their Web site at www.celebritydairy.com or call (877) 742-5176.

For an intellectual take on the Hallmark love-fest known as Valentine's Day, go hear well-known Southern author Gail Godwin at Quail Ridge Books on Feb. 11. Her first book of nonfiction, Heart: A Personal Journey Through Its Myths and Meanings, probes the history of the symbol, starting with its first-known representation--a cave painting in Asturias, Spain--and continuing up through Biblical times, the troubadours and into the 20th century. A threetime National Book Award nominee, Godwin draws on lots of other literary greats, Shakespeare, Shaw, Dickens and more, to enhance her case that how each era imagines the heart relates to how we imagine the human condition. The reading starts at 4 p.m. Call 828-1588 for details.
