Raleigh's sense of itself has been formed around the Capitol; Chapel Hill's by the venerable Carolina campus. But Durham is the town that tobacco built, and its identity coalesced around its many handsome tobacco-related buildings. The last tobacco manufacturing operation in the Bull City will close this year, but the Historic Preservation Society of Durham's Fourth Annual Tour of Historic Properties on May 6 will allow a look inside several of the historic buildings that give Durham its unique personality. Included on the tour will be the soon-to-be-renovated American Tobacco Campus; West Village, the newly converted warehouses formerly part of Liggett & Myers; the old Golden Belt plant and several other sites. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 on the day of the tour. Call 682-3036. A related slide talk by adaptive reuse architect Eddie Belk and artist Susan Page will be held May 3 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at N.C. Mutual Insurance, 411 W. Chapel Hill St. Free. --Kate Dobbs Ariail

Cool Web site Insound (www.insound.com), touting itself as "the leading Web site for the underground lifestyle," stops in Chapel Hill as part of its two-week, East Coast college campus Insound Vinyl Van Tour (van driver pictured left). What we're talking here is free merch: Matador, Subpop, Polyvinyl and other labels have contributed stock for giveaways. Insound will also be selling limited edition LPs and CDs, as well as videos and zines from their online catalog. The Van will be hit the UNC campus (at the Union Circle) on May 4 from noon to 5 p.m. --Angie Carlson
