Manbites Dog Theater Company opens its 15th season with the area premiere of Kenneth Lonergan's This is Our Youth, (pictured left) and although performances don't begin until Aug. 16, tickets are selling so fast we thought we'd give you a heads-up now. Youth, which is set in 1982, in the middle of the "me decade," follows three 20-somethings living in an Upper West Side apartment as they struggle to find purpose. Although this subject matter sounds like the perfect material for a pedestrian play, anyone who has seen the film You Can Count On Me, which was written and directed by Lonergan and won the Grand Jury Prize and Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance, knows what magic Lonergan can work with a simple story. "Although the play is set in 1982, and there is something importantly specific about it, it resonates in a strong, broad sense," director Jeff Storer told the Indy. "People who saw You Can Count on Me will really appreciate the richness of the script." Manbites Dog presents This is Our Youth through Sept. 16. Call 682-3343 for ticket information and details.

DiamondDiamondDiamondPeter Shaffer wrote Equus after driving through the English countryside one day with a friend. After passing a stable, Shaffer's friend related a tale he heard at a dinner party about a disturbed young man who'd committed a hideous crime, blinding six horses with a hoof pick. The crime shocked local magistrates more for its lack of a coherent or rational explanation than for its savagery. Equus was written in 1973 and ran for over 1,000 performances on Broadway, winning the Tony Award and the Drama Critics Award. Now Raleigh's Theatre in the Park brings the drama to the Triangle from Aug. 10-26. Call 831- 6058 for details.
