In theater
A departure from the kind of one-liner comedies that first made him famous, Neil Simon's 1983 Brighton Beach Memoirs takes a turn inward. Its Brooklyn protagonist, 15-year-old Eugene Jerome, is simultaneously in love with baseball and his attractive young cousin Nora, and beset by a host of meddling relatives. An introspective sort, Eugene starts to record the craziness of his family life in a memoir that adds a second layer of reflection to Simon's play, the first in an autobiographical trilogy that includes Biloxi Blues and Broadway Bound. Clearly, alliteration has never been a problem for the playwright, nor has he had any trouble getting laughs or large audiences, and more of his plays have been adapted to film than any other contemporary playwright. University Theatre at N.C. State brings Brighton Beach Memoirs to life from Feb. 28-March 3 at 8 p.m., and March 4 at 3 p.m., in the Stewart Theatre. Tickets are $12 for adults; $11 for N.C.
