In the late 1970s, New Yorker Elizabeth Swados interviewed scores of teens living on the streets. Using these stories of alienation and survival, Swados crafted the hit Broadway play, Runaways
, and its themes of young people's anger, abuse, fear and hope in the midst of pain are still relevant decades later. On Sept. 1 and Sept. 2, the Durham-based National Ensemble Theatre will perform the work at the Carolina Theatre, and the production includes actors from local high schools and colleges. Tickets are $15 for general admission; seniors and students $10. For times and more information, call the Carolina Theatre at 560-3030.
