In theater

Who was Peter Pan? Images arise of the Disneyfied sprite who could fly to Never Never Land. But local director Derrick Ivey says that Peter Pan's originator, author J.M. Barrie, intended his story to focus on a girl approaching maturity, rather than on a boy who would not grow up. Under Ivey's direction, The ACT's new production of Peter Pan (pictured right) will incorporate the wild and seductive spirit of Barrie's 1904 play with the darker aspects of his novel Peter and Wendy, written in 1911 after his wife had left him, the children who inspired the play had grown up, and their parents had suddenly died. Because of the adult perspective of this production, it is not re- commended for children under 10. The show runs at 8 p.m. on June 1-4, June 8-10, and at 3 p.m. on June 11 at the ArtsCenter. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $8 for ArtsCenter friends. Call 929-2787, ext. 101, for more details.
