Instead of blowing all your dough on holiday shopping at the megamall, why not support local artists--and worthy local causes in the bargain?

Beastly art is guaranteed when the Carter Building Studios hosts their annual benefit for regional animal charities this Friday night. The gig includes good food, live music and works by a constellation of local artists on the theme, "See the World of Animals Through the Eyes of the Artist." Proceeds go to Second Chance Animal Shelter, Snowflake Animal Rescue, Carolina Animal Activists Together (CAAT), A New Leash on Life and Safe Haven for Cats. Since representatives and clients from each will be there as well, it's as good a time as any to bring out the animal in you. Call 954-9383 for more info.

Then Saturday and Sunday, Chapel Hill's Ginger Young Gallery fetes Music Maker Relief Foundation with an art sale of over 600 works by 65 Southern folk and self-taught artists. Music Maker CDs by Guitar Gabriel, Captain John and Cool Luke will also be on sale, in an exhibition whose proceeds will help old Southern blues heroes meet their everyday needs. Preview the artworks on the Web at www.gingeryoung.com, and call 932-6003 for more information.
