In the galleries

From Oct. 5 through Oct. 28, LUMP gallery in Raleigh will be showing new work by Texas artist Ludwig Schwarz, who has recently been featured in Art in America. In the exhibition, titled Thrillseeker(s), Schwarz moves within many different media, including sculpture, photography, video and painting. "Ludwig deals with the mundane, the everyday: signage, professional sports, celebrities," says Thomas Williams, assistant director of Angstrom gallery in Dallas, Schwarz's home base. "He doesn't necessarily critique anything, but all of his work has an element of humor to it. It celebrates the awkwardness of everything." One piece that Williams says to look for: a sign announcing "Ludwig Schwarz Indian Cuisine," which the artist puts up outside the gallery during his show. "It gets ordinary people to come in," Williams says. He also noted that the work Schwarz is showing in Raleigh will probably be a little "edgier" than what he's able to show in Dallas. There will be an opening reception Friday, Oct. 5, from 7-10 p.m. Call 821-9999 for details.
