In the galleries

In July, Artspace's UpFront Gallery, in Raleigh, will be draped with the unframed works on paper of Durham artist Terry Burtyk. The series of drawings, titled Gentryville, shows the influence of Burtyk's training as a printmaker. Burtyk explores the human form by working and reworking her drawings until they represent the true responses she had to a model's pose. "When I started getting back into visual art 4 to 5 years ago, I wanted to start with something that seemed more traditional, like starting with a model," Burtyk told the Indy. "But finishing is hard because there's always more options." Burtyk spent as long as two years on some of the drawings in her new exhibition, which will open at Artspace with a reception on Friday, July 6, from 6-10 p.m., and run through July 28.

Also at Artspace, Triangle painter Eric McRay will be showing new work out of his studio, Room 205, on Friday, July 6, from 6-10 p.m. McRay was named one of the "2001 Artists to Watch" by The News & Observer. His colorful pop art works take on a number of popular culture icons, and his new show will have a cross-section of works from these different series and themes. Prominent among them will be his bottle figures, and his jazz and blues series (see "Bottle Figure," pictured). "I want people to be able to come in and see the work in progress and see the beginning, middle and end of the process of making art," McRay says. His studio doors are open Tuesday though Saturday for just that purpose. For either event, call 821-2787 for details.
