Kicking off a nationwide headlining tour for their new Lost Highway release, Bramble Rose, Tift Merritt and The Carbines play two Cat's Cradle shows this Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8, with singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith opening. And Sunday, from 4 to 7 p.m., join Merritt and the band for a send-off party at the Bynum General Store (where, incidentally, Merritt still keeps a P.O. box). Chatham County Line will provide the music, with Allen and Sons supplying the 'cue. Merritt says the party will give her and the band a chance to relax and "get right with our peeps." Alejandro Escovedo is a true journeyman. From his early days as an Iggy-loving punk in San Francisco's Nuns (the band opened for the Sex Pistol's infamous final show in San Fran in 1978), to his work with alt-country forbearers Rank and File and True Believers, to his acclaimed current solo career, Escovedo has certainly made his mark on American music. The Texas-based singer-songwriter is currently on tour promoting a just-issued album of songs from By the Hand of the Father, a play chronicling the lives of Mexican men born in the early 1900s who moved their families to the U.S. Look to also hear tunes from his early '90s records Gravity and 13 Years, both of which have recently been re-released in deluxe two-CD editions. See Al with Charlotte alt-country/classic pop band Lou Ford this Thursday, June 6, at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro. Call 967-9053 for details. --Jon Wurster
