In the clubs

The Basement, a newly opened Durham club at the location of the old Under the Street rock club, is now run by Boo Kauffman (who ran Boo's Hideaway in Raleigh). Seeing how Boo's in charge, the space will probably have an alt-country bent, although Hobex played recently and the Cigar Store Indians are coming up. This week, Tres Chicas, consisting of former Whiskeytown violin player and vocalist Caitlin Cary, play with guitarists/vocalists Tonya Lamm (Hazeldine) and Lynn Blakey (Glory Fountain). With original alt-country and pop material, the women switch off between lead vocals and harmonies to make achingly beautiful music. See them, along with Dave Kepford and the Ohio Farm Cats, this Friday, March 1 at The Basement in Durham. Call 286-7272 for details.

DiamondDiamondDiamondToronto quartet The Sadies are easily one of the best live shows around: Imagine a mix of oddball surf to twang country, punk-rock style. On their latest release, the Steve Albini-produced Tremendous Efforts (Bloodshot), The Sadies dish up a rootsy rendition of "I Wasn't Born to Follow" (the Goffin/King number done by The Byrds on the Easy Rider soundtrack) and a gutsy Gun Club cover ("Mother of Earth"), along with a whole lot of catchy band-penned tunes embellished with pedal steel, accordion, Moog and more hep sounds. Live, the brothers Dallas and Travis Good cut striking figures, and the band's tighter than dick's hat band. See them this Monday, Feb. 4, at Go! Room 4 in Carrboro. Call 969-1400 for details. -Angie Carlson
