OK readers: Name one band from Iowa besides Slipnot. Give up? Well, then put your hands together for Scarlet Runner, a Waterloo, Iowa group who've snagged opening spots for everyone from Ian Moore (also in town this week) to The Chris Duarte Group. A funky power trio that's not afraid to use a wah-wah pedal, Scarlet Runner's 1998 CD, Departure, is characterized by mature, bluesy vocals and guitar-work. Formed in '94, the group now has an average age of only 22 (they still look 19). Soundwise, you can imagine these guys blaring out of your car radio on a Midwestern classic rock station. Intrigued? Check 'em out Thursday, Feb. 7, at Chapel Hill's Local 506. Call 942-5506 for details.

It's hard to imagine a harder-rocking bill than this Saturday's Go! Room 4 show featuring headliners The Cherry Valence, Greensboro's All Night (pictured), and two-piece blues/garage duo The Dynamite Brothers. Having just seen All Night blow the doors off UNC-Chapel Hill's Great Hall, we can vouch for their mighty power. While few could withstand their mega-watt onslaught, All Night channeled everyone from Free and Humble Pie to early James Gang. And they even looked right with their low-slung jeans, sporting 'dos like they're fixin' to ride the Grand Funk Railroad. There's even something hot about the bass player's missing front tooth. The Dynamite Brothers are a trio that take Jon Spencer and put him back in the garage, while Estrus Records' recording artists The Cherry Valence--Raleigh road warriors who feature roaring Ampeg amps and two drummers--need no introduction. This triple bill goes down Saturday, Feb. 9, at Go! Room 4 in Carrboro. Call 969-1400 for details. --Angie Carlson
