Two rip-snortin' garage-rock duos, The Dynamite Brothers and The Loners (pictured), hit Chapel Hill's Local 506 for a night of '60s garage-rock influenced, blues-inspired guitar/drum mayhem. They'll be joined by The Rosebuds, a bass-free Wilmington trio that tosses keyboards into their guitar/drums orgy. You can hear The Loners on Demonbeach Presents, a 12-inch vinyl compilation recently issued by local imprint Demonbeach (owned by longtime Raleigh rocker Cliff Mann). The album also contains tracks from The Ghost of Rock, Daddy, The Bad Checks, Butchwax, The Clones, Proof and Dexter Romweber--check it out at demonbeach.com. Look for a full-length by The Loners this spring on new local indie, Mouthful of Bees. In the meantime, bring yourself and your attitude down to Chapel Hill's Local 506 this Friday, Feb. 1. Call 942-5506 for details.

Once a resident of these parts, Ken Waldman has become "Alaska's Fiddling Poet," a fine fiddler who has published more than 300 stories and poems about politics, love, music and dance. The Hushpuppies, a crackerjack old-time string band from Chapel Hill and Greensboro, join Waldman for a concert at Carrboro's ArtsCenter, where they open for singer/songwriter Jamie Anderson. Anderson, who's been touring nationally since '87, is a fave on the folk-pop scene. Join both Anderson and Ken Waldman & The Hushpuppies this Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Carrborro ArtsCenter, and help Anderson celebrate the release of her new CD, Listen. Call 929-2787 for details. --Art Menius
