In the clubs
Post-rock triple-threat alert: Saddle Creek labelmates Cursive and our own Sorry About Dresden are joined by The White Octave for a night of guitar-driven indie rock, emo-style. These bands are more related than folks in the average holler: Former Cursive member Stephen Pederson is the songwriter for The White Octave, whose recent album, Menergy, features jagged guitars, dynamic (as in a whisper to a scream) vocals and intense, intelligent lyrics. Sorry About Dresden, featuring former Nebraskans Matt Tomich and Matt Oberst (older brother of Conor Oberst, of Bright Eyes/Saddle Creek fame) are on an East Coast tour with Omaha's Cursive through October (if you haven't checked out SAD's last EP, How the Cold War Began, jump on it). On Cursive's recent Burst and Bloom EP--gorgeous cello lines over brittle guitars--they name check everything from "Chapel Hill in the early '90s" to Shudder to Think, Fugazi and the D.C. sound--and that's just the opening track. Just Jonesin' for a Country Song--a Tribute to George Jones, is an evening of local alt-country acts each performing a tribute set of their favorite Jones numbers. Whether it's John Howie doing "Accidentally on Purpose," Big Dixie's rendition of the tearjerker "He Stopped Loving Her Today," or Hooverville's version of "If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me, Her Memory Will," you're in for a night of beers, tears and country tunes. Also on the bill are Thad Cockrell and the Starlite Country Band, Kim McPhatter and Tom Meltzer. It all goes down at Fowler's back porch in Durham this Friday, Oct. 12.
