If you've heard D.C.-formed, N.Y.-based alterna-rockers French Kicks' (pictured), latest EP, Young Lawyers (produced by Greg Talenfield, who's worked with Beck and Blues Explosion), you know the post-punk influenced four-piece delivers the goods: jagged guitars, strange keyboard-enhanced forays into pop ("Piano"), with a funky-trashy rock rhythm section and even harmonies that'll remind you of '70s power pop. Our very own The White Octave, who have a spankin' new album titled Menergy out on Louisville's Initial Records, join French Kicks for a cool double bill this Sunday, July 1, at Go! Room 4 in Carrboro. Call 969-1400 for details.

DiamondDiamondDiamondGainesville, Fla.'s House of Ma isn't exactly your average "drag show." Sure, there's big hair, elaborate choreography, makeup and stage clothes, but the touring lesbian drag troop (usually numbering between six to 10 members) send up such testosterone-imbued male groups as KISS, Motley Crüe and mustachioed Wild West types along with such female icons as Madonna, Gloria Gaynor and Cher. Boasting a repertoire of over a hundred ditties (lip-synched, of course), House of Ma has mounted a dozen or so full-scaled, themed extravaganzas (including events featuring The Butchies and cult hero/poet Eileen Miles). Catch them performing "The USO Show" this Monday, July 2, at The Cave in Chapel Hill. Call 968-9308 for details. --Angie Carlson
