Come on people now, smile on your brother ... It's been about a quarter century since Jesse Colin Young, leader of '60s group The Youngbloods, sang "Get Together," a song that became one of the anthems of the counterculture. Still a singer-songwriter and social activist, Young is joined on the road these days by his two sons, performing old songs as well as material from his new album, Walk the Talk. Young's upcoming local performance is a benefit for N.C. WARN (Waste Awareness and Reduction Network), the Durham-based group that's been working to prevent Carolina Power and Light from making Shearon Harris Nuclear plant the nation's largest storage site for highly irradiated nuclear fuel rods. N.C. WARN has been pivotal in holding off CP&L's expansion for the past two and a half years. Young, as one of the co-founders of the No Nukes movement in the early '70s, has long been an advocate of finding earth-friendly alternatives to nuclear power. Hear the music and contribute to the cause this Sunday, June 3, at 8 p.m. at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro. Singer-songwriter Jon Shain will open the bill. Call 490-0747 for more details.

DiamondDiamondDiamondGWAR fans rejoice? Slymenstra Hyman (pictured) is bringing her Girly Freak Show to Go! Room 4 in Carrboro Saturday, June 2, with Torture King opening. Girly Freak Show is a female-powered combination sideshow, circus and burlesque act--y'know, chicks blowing 10-foot flames and other stunts you're better off not trying at home. The Torture King is fairly self-explanatory. Call 969-1400 for details.

DiamondDiamondDiamondThere will be a local concert to benefit Damien Echols, the alleged ringleader of the West Texas Three, the Arkansas teenagers some say were railroaded on murder charges. The three, now in jail and convicted of murder, were portrayed as "satan worshippers" because they favored black clothing and heavy metal. Believed innocent by the filmmakers who documented their case in Paradise Lost: The Murders at Robin Hood Hills, the West Texas Three case has now sparked support from groups all over the nation. Locally, benefit organizer Ann Humphreys has put together a musical evening featuring Shark Quest , Greg Hawks and The Tremblers, Hobex and Lynn Blakey (Glory Fountain, Tres Chicas). The concert will take place at Carrboro's Cat's Cradle this Friday, June 1. Admission is $10, with money going to Echols' defense fund. Call 967-9053 for details. --Angie Carlson
