Chapel Hill's only nonprofit, cooperatively run, progressive bookstore and hub for local community activists, Internationalist Books & Community Center, will be holding a benefit rock show at Go! Room 4 this week. Thrill Jockey electronica trio Trans Am (pictured), from Washington, D.C., will headline, along with groovy cover band The Jimi Hendrix Inexperience and Dia:pa:som, featuring members of Rubeo. (Trans Am will also appear at Kings in Raleigh the following evening.) Check it out Friday, April 27, 9 p.m. at Go! Room 4 in Carrboro. The $7 tickets can be purchased in advance from Internationalist Books, Schoolkids on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, or Go! Rehearsals at 414 E. Main St., Carrboro. Call 942-1740 or visit for details.

It's Honky-Tonka-Rama time again--two nights of twangabilly cowpunk with attitude, courtesy of Local 506. Friday night's lineup features the "Forget, Hell!" sounds of Raleigh's Anti-Carpetbagger's League, as well as Greg Hawks and The Tremblers, Big Dixie, and the delightfully inbred Drunk Stuntmen, who'll play Humble Pie, Saturday, April 28. Saturday's lineup features Hobart Willis and the Two Dollar Pistols, as well as Drive-By Truckers. And don't miss Slim Cessna's Auto Club: Alternative Tentacle's Jello Biafra proclaimed these Colorado hound dogs "the country band that plays the bar at the end of the world." They ain't purty, but these Coors-swillin' swingers mean bidness. The fest takes place Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28 at Local 506. Call 942-5506 for details.

Emo DIY success story The Promise Ring, the best of the new generation of bands inspired by the likes of our own Superchunk, tear it up at the Cat's Cradle this Tuesday, May 1, with Camden opening. The Cradle also hosts punk-poet Patti Smith, a living, performing icon of pop culture, from her early days as Robert Mapplethorpe's roomie-muse; to her collaborations with playwright Sam Shepherd (Cowboy Mouth); to her incendiary East Village poetry readings in the mid-'70s, resulting in her collaboration with guitarist and Nuggets-compiler Lenny Kaye and the formation of The Patti Smith Group. Even her "housewife" period found her married to (sadly departed) MC5 co-founder Fred "Sonic" Smith. These days, Smith brings her son along on the road and--when she's in the area--she enjoys the ambience of the Silk Road Tea House. While her new material may not rock your world, she's amazing live. Once her distinctively raw alto wraps around a classic like "She" or "Ask the Angels," you'll be falling to your knees, mumbling "we're not worthy... " See her Wednesday, May 2, at Cat's Cradle. Call 967-9053 for details. --Angie Carlson
