In swinging sounds

The sound that began in the dance clubs of Kansas City and pushed big band music into overdrive swings through Carrboro on Sunday with a gig at the ArtsCenter by the Count Basie Orchestra. You'll hear the hits like "One O'Clock Jump," but you'll also hear some fresh arrangements (the group had a recent hit with a CD of Duke Ellington tunes) and an energy that earned the band back-to-back Grammies in the late '90s. The orchestra's latest tour is in honor of the centennial of the birth of founder William James Basie.

Tickets are $22. Show starts at 7 p.m.

Each ticket holder is invited to attend a free swing dance workshop, featuring Richard Badu, from 6-7 p.m. in the West End Theater.

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with Irish fiddler Grainne Murphy as she's joined for a performance of traditional St. Pat's day tunes by Todd Denman on uillean pipes, guitarist Rex McGee, the Murphy brothers on penny whistle and bodhran, and a host of local folk musicians.

Murphy's show at Reynolds Theater starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10. For more information, visit www.tickets.duke.edu/ or call 684-4444.
