In road trips

No, it's not a joke. English '80s hair-metal band Def Leppard have survived a lot in their long career, from the infamous incident in which their drummer, Rick Allen, lost his arm in a car accident (Mötley Crüe's Vince Neil was navigating) to seeing their brand of arena pop-metal go the way of the thunder lizard. But will they survive this: being the "headliner" for the opening of a new Wal-Mart Supercenter in Fayetteville, where the former hitmakers will serenade shoppers from the parking lot, followed by an autograph session (they have a new disc, X, they're promoting). Oh, Cruel Fortuna indeed. Actually, it's not the first time the rockers, known for hits like "Photograph" and "Pour Some Sugar on Me," have worked with the discount chain: They played a San Antonio Wal-Mart back in '99. The free concert takes place Wednesday, July 31, at 6 p.m. at Wal-Mart's Fayetteville location at the corner of Raeford and Gillis Hill roads. --Angie Carlson
