Proto-rap revolutionary musician/poet Gil Scott-Heron (pictured) will be performing live at the Millennium Center Underground in Winston-Salem Friday, Aug. 3. Scott-Heron, who started as a writer and academic (he attended Lincoln University and did graduate work at Johns Hopkins) some 30-odd years ago, went on to achieve national recognition by blending street poetry, jazz and funk on such subversive, wit-laden "hits" as "The Revolution Will Not be Televised." Along with partner Brian Jackson, Scott-Heron mixed music and Black Power attitude, combining beats, hooks and savvy, satiric rhymes to achieve a crossover success that blurred the definition of "underground." In '74, "The Bottle" brought the duo (with the Midnight Band) to the attention of Clive Davis and his new label, Arista Records, where the group released discs that explored dance grooves and bluesy soul. Still publishing books and poetry, with nearly 20 albums to his credit, Scott-Heron and his band, The Amnesia Express, will be performing a career-spanning set, and will be joined by spoken-word artist Shon Lomax as well as Slim and DJ SK, who'll be spinning '60s and '70s groovalicious classics.
