in planting seeds

The day in 1971 that Alice Waters opened Chez Panisse in Berkeley in is widely seen as the day that the American food revolution began. With a philosophy that food is best when seasonal and local, and a style that encompassed many European culinary traditions but relied on American produce rather than heavy sauces or complex technique, Ms. Waters set the scene for the best of what was to become of American cuisine. This week, she will give the address for the 10th anniversary dinner of SEEDS, the Durham organization dedicated to fostering community gardens, supporting the farmers' market, and providing education through sustainable gardening. Some of the restaurants providing food for the (totally local totally sustainable) dinner are Nana's, Enoteca Vin, Foster's Market, and Pop's.

SEEDS' 10th anniversary dinner will be held on Saturday Oct. 9 at Bay 7, American Tobacco Campus. Tickets are $100 per person, a portion of which is tax deductible. Call 683-1197 for tickets and information.
