A couple weeks ago, we told you about the mandala under construction at UNC-Chapel Hill's Ackland Art Museum. That
mandala was created by two Buddhist monks, using colored sand, and will be on display through June 8. Not to be outdone, the Duke University Union Visual Arts Committee is presenting a bottle cap mandala
(pictured), which Durham artist Bryant Holsenbeck will build between now and March 22. "The reason I'm doing this is that I've been documenting detritus in our society for over 10 years," says Holsenbeck. "I've chosen the mandala for its powerful symbology--I'm inspired by the mandalas from Native American and Buddhist traditions." There will be a reception for the artist on March 23 in the Louise Jones Brown Gallery. Her mandala will remain on display through April 14, giving you ample time to compare the Buddhists' traditional mandala with Bryant's unique interpretation. Call 684-2911 for details.
