Triangle hip-hop fans are in for a treat this week when hip hop's best-known band, Philadelphia's Grammy-award winning The Roots
arrive for a show with L.A.-based group The Pharcyde
. The Roots took hip hop to another level--and put the City of Brotherly Love back on the map in the process--with the release of their second CD, '94's critically acclaimed Do You Want More?
With "Black Thought" on lead vocals, and Amir "?uestlove" Thompson leading the band on drums, The Roots have played for such artists as Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Bilal and Jaguar Wright, to name a few. And in 2000, The Roots won a Grammy for their single, "You Got Me" (on Things Fall Apart
). The Pharcyde have made a few personnel changes since their last release, Labcabincalifornia
, which drew rave reviews back in 1995 and is still considered a classic today. Still, many critics and fans alike consider the group one of the best live shows around. This free show is at Duke University's main quad on Wednesday, April 24, 7 p.m. --Gabriel M. Rich
