In Habitat benefits

Having brought their original, traditional bluegrass sound to audiences in the USA, Canada and Western Europe since 1981, The Shady Grove Band will open the second season of "Fall for Habitat," family concerts at Chapel Hill's University Baptist Church to benefit Habitat for Humanity. The Shady Grove Band tours internationally, but local appearances featuring the Chapel Hill based ensemble's powerhouse picking, strong new songs, and noted harmonies happen only about once a year. The show begins at 8 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 13, at the University Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. Suggested donations are $10 adults, students $7, and $5 for children younger than 10. For details call 942-2157. --Art Menius

DiamondDiamondDiamondFor those of you who want to support Habitat but aren't necessarily into bluegrass, check out St. John's Metropolitan Community Church's gospel concert Saturday, Sept. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. St. John's Habitat for Humanity International Fundraising Committee organized the concert, featuring groups and performers like Elizabeth Reep, Rose Martin, Bradley Watkins, the Imani Ensemble, NU Souls and St. John's MCC's own Joyful Morning Choir. Clap your hands and get on down to N.C. State University's Stewart Theatre. Tickets are $10; call 834-2611 for information.
