Brooklynite David Ellis says that the beats of old school hip hop are always in the back of his mind. As a kid growing up in a log cabin in rural North Carolina, he listened to the unique New York style with "one hand on the pause button and the other on an elaborate assembly of coat hangers, duct tape and tin foil jammed into the hole that was once an antenna." Ellis' love for the culture is a backbone to his internationally acclaimed artwork.
Boar's Head/War's Head is his first solo exhibition in North Carolina. The installation will feature a drum player machine, motion paintings, murals, drawings, gourd speakers, a hybrid gramophone turntable and letterpress prints. The exhibition will kick off during the First Friday Gallery Walk at Lump gallery/projects in downtown Raleigh.
LUMP Gallery hosts a reception for Ellis Friday, Sept. 3, from 7-11 p.m. The exhibition runs weekends Sept. 3-26, 1-5 p.m.
