In festivals

Fans of the "other white meat" will have a field day on Thursday, May 25, at the Central Carolina Porkfestival. Sponsored by the Amran Temple Shrine, the all-you-can-eat-and-drink event will feature six pork items, including pork chops, ribs, barbecue, country ham and red-eye gravy, ham and sausage biscuits and hot dogs; it will be held at the state fairgrounds in Raleigh. Authentic Southern-cooked chitterlings and fried sweet potatoes also make an appearance in the side-dish menu, and live bands play throughout the 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. serving period. Tickets are $15 and can be obtained from any Shriner or by writing to Central Carolina Porkfestival, 11101 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, N.C., 27614. For more information, call 848-7972.

Formed at Kentucky State University in 1976, Midnight Star funked its way to early-'80s success with the double platinum album, No Parking on the Dance Floor. After years of going their separate ways, band members are working on a new compilation and will reunite for select shows, including an appearance at this year's Bimbé Festival. Held May 27 and 28 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, the African cultural festival will also feature The Manhattans, local reggae rocker Kimbute, Brutha Monk, an adult talent show and more. Admission to the event is free, although donations are encouraged. For more details, call Parks and Recreation at 560-4355.
