Hillsborough residents will see things spinning, spinning this Saturday, Aug. 11, when their town is overrun by bicyclists for Bikefest 2001, The Sixth Annual Heritage Tour. Sponsored by Carolina Tarwheels, the event is a series of five organized cycling tours through Hillsborough, including rides of 20, 31, 62 and 100 miles. Novice riders can choose the less strenuous Fun Ride through Hillsborough's historic district. All rides are supported with marked routes, maps, rest stops with refreshments, and support vehicles driven by cell phone-wielding helpers. Part of the $20 registration fee for longer rides goes toward bicycle safety programs, including a helmet giveaway day in the spring. "The city of Hillsborough is really into this--it's the largest single-day bike club event in North Carolina," says Alan Nechemias, of the Carolina Tarwheels. Nechemias tries to entice new riders with great food: A veritable smorgasbord will be laid out for riders at rest stops, including watermelon, cantaloupe, red seedless grapes and homebaked cookies. A mechanic will also be following the cyclists should any accidents happen--James Whitaker of The Bicycle Station fixes bikes before, during and after the runs. Last year, Bikefest attracted over 675 riders from across the state. This year, Nechemias expects an even greater turnout. Call the Tarwheels hotline at 687-5066 for details.
