in cool American roots

The 2006 American Roots Series rolls on in impressive fashion with Nashville's DAVID OLNEY on Saturday, Jan. 28 and a triumphant return from RICKIE LEE JONES and her band on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Olney's penetrating work has earned him a reputation as one of the most literate and craft-conscious songwriters in the Americana/folk world as well as testimonials from writer Dave Marsh and peers such as Guy Clark and Steve Earle. Onstage, he operates like a method actor, seemingly becoming the characters his songs give voice to. Rickie Lee Jones sauntered onto the scene in the late '70s. A corner-stool priestess of cool (or, as last summer's three-disc anthology dubbed her, the Duchess of Coolsville), her slurry, jazzy delivery was perfect for sharing the stories of the offbeat characters who populated her tunes. And as she proved two years ago when she headlined the first American Roots Series, she's only gotten cooler. Both shows start at 8 p.m. at THE ARTSCENTER in Carrboro. Tickets for Olney are $13; tickets for Jones are $39. Call 929-2787 or visit
