In concert

The big-band swing, dance-cocktail culture resurgence has produced a wealth of swingin' copycats with varying degrees of talent, from Big Bad Voodoo Daddy to Lou Bega. At the top of the heap, capturing the true feel of the 1940s is an energetic cat with a big smile and a bald head named George Gee (pictured left). He'll blow into town with an entourage of dancers and lady vocalists, all dressed to the nines with gardenias behind their ears, and spin out the Count Basie and Chick Webb dancehall favorites like nobody's business. George Gee and his Make-Believe Ballroom Orchestra, featuring the all-girl trio Swing Set (pictured below), and award-winning Lindy Hoppers Janice Wilson and Matt Bedell, will play NCSU's Stewart Theatre this Saturday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m. Put on your dancing shoes and call 515-1100 to get your tickets.

DiamondDiamondDiamondIt is enormously unfortunate that when many Americans think of Vietnam, their only association with the country is military conflict. The Southeast Asian country is one of startling beauty with over 4,000 years of history and an extremely elegant culture. The ArtsCenter is hosting a concert by the Khac Chi Ensemble, a group of musicians who will perform traditional Vietnamese classical music and folk songs on instruments that are unique to Vietnam. They will hold an evening concert Saturday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m., but the kids are invited to a school show during the day on Friday, Feb. 11, during which the ensemble will play and students from UNC will present a fair celebrating other cultural traditions. Call the ArtsCenter, 929-2787, for tickets and details about the school show.
